Macro photography can be as simple as zooming in to an object and snapping the shutter. There are a lot of things going on that affect how the image comes out. In the technical sense, a macro image is one which is captured at "full size" -- or a magnification of 1:1 -- on the sensor. While in application, many amateur photographers think of macro as "extreme close up". There are significant differences in "extreme close up" shots and those shot at 1:1 (or greater) magnification.
